Is there any reason not to go with perpetual BST?

It would need to be permanent GMT for me.

The thought of it staying light until around 11pm in midsummer is horrendous and in the winter it will not be light much before 9.30am. For our Scottish friends these problems would be even more pronounced.
That it doesn't match lifestyle that well, maybe. Lighter mornings when still less than totally alert is more useful that lighter evenings. Preferably we'd alter the clocks, say, monthly, to keep sunrise constant.
But hang on! You said permanent BST didn't you, 3Ts. So the summer problem I feared would not be evident. Only the winter one. The last time a proposal such as this was put forward it was suggested we align with European time (and still changed the clocks). I must go for a lie down (but I can't - it's still daylight) :-)
We tried it once between 1968 - 1971. Didn't work for the reasons NJ gives.
It isn’t clear what the proposal will be: hopefully the sensible one of let everyone decide for themselves.

so everyone decides what time it is ich? right oh!
I like things the way they are. But we aren’t actually ‘saving’ daylight anymore than we’re ‘losing it’ with GMT. This complaint arises every October and it’s infuriating
Academic really, as by the time there's any change we'll be long gone.
Yes why not: everyone decides whether to implement so called ‘daylight saving time’
It’s called freedom to choose and I thought you’d like that :-)
I've never understood the need for chopping and changing the clocks.

The sun gets up and goes to bed when it does.

Cows still need milking at 5am whether it's in Spring or Autumn.
Nothing will change
It would be much easier to alter the parallels of latitude on the map Move the Equator 45 degrees north: the sun would automatically follow this move; and perpetual BST would be nary a problem.

I would prefer to get rid of it, personally.

Fair enough all, I'd be happy with GMT too, I just think we should settle on one or tother and stop b66ering about wit it.
I know.....let's have a referendum!

kromo, you want to end time entirely? You are not alone, read this:
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
I read it and TBF I did struggle to grasp what he was on about! Jim may have read this too, maybe had a different interpretations
Not read it, in fact. Looks interesting if perhaps a little sensationalist.

As regards clocks changing, probably a good thing to get rid of it entirely, rather than as a choice for individual countries, as that would just end up creating even more potential confusion. Imagine if Belgium and Germany didn't change the system, but France and the Netherlands did, for example.

I think the problem is that the time zones are straight longitude line ins the main that become more unsuitable as one goes further north (or south though less people to effect) so really they should proscribe a curve up to the Arctic, though that is impractical so we are where we are.
As I understand it countries can set their own dates. Tho I think they are all obliged to implement it.
I can’t see anything changing as I say tho if rules are relaxed maybe the more northerly countries will abolish it
