IMO it's about learning to have influence and responsibility and so forth. Those most into it get elected for union positions and impose nonsense on the rest, thinking they've done something useful, which unfortunately may not be the case. Some actually find something useful to push though.

You're probably right, that in a bedwettingly pathetic outpost people are considered too delicate that the universally accepted way to show appreciation is being stopped, if that's what pleases them and allows them to appear so achingly right-on. I'll just put it down to them being morons.
