Selling one of the wee ones is extreme. Renting them out would be okay I think but not selling them.

Mamyalynne at 13.30., Something on the lines of 'If you don't know a person with a plasma TV etc. etc. you are lucky'. I don't know anyone like that who doesn't pay for it themselves..
I don't have a large screen TV, I don't have a smartphone or tablet, I don't have any of that trendy stuff. I manage to live quite happily and my income is below the limit for Universal Credit. I even manage to give to others out of it (just made a cake which will raise money for a good cause).
People need to learn what is essential. Rent (or mortgage), heating, rates, food (the bill can be quite small if you learn to cook) and transport (again, plan your journeys and achieve as much as you can in one trip). I'm really not trying to be 'holier than thou' it's just that this is how I was raised - you don't waste money, resources etc.. Youngsters need to take this on board. They really don't need a lot of stuff they think is essential.

It was in response to those who commented that all the so called poverty porn programmes portrayed peopke with all the above and more.

I was pointing out that there are many - you and me amongst them.

I have never had a new fridge/freezer, auto washer or three piece suite - always had hand me downs and second hand to prioritise any money coming in to keep the roof over our heads and the children in as much comfort as possible.

I therefore don't owe anyone a penny piece.

Apologies, Mamya. I've never had a new 3-piece suite either - but I did achieve a new fridge-freezer when living in France. Not quite sure now where to go - but I do think that expectations are too high.

I also think that the roll-out of Universal Credit has been cack-handed and people are suffering. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm sure the problem was mostly down to me, I have already sold one of my cousins I fear :-)

My only niggle is all the things I have never had new will suddenly all need replacing at once, such is life eh.

Yup! Mamya. I was seeing still waters ahead (well earned) until younger daughter's marriage collapsed dramatically this Summer. Guess whose savings are now disappearing? :)
