They kill 1800 a year in the UK, that is the equivalent of eight 757 aircraft dropping out of the sky. If eight aircraft were crashing annually, then they would be grounded. But cars are allowed to continue on the road despite the large numbers being killed by them.
Computer operated cars have the potential to make cars much safe, by eliminating human error. We should be eagerly anticipating their introduction, not being scared of them.

//NO, stats in their favour will not be enough. Wait for when one of these kills a cyclist or pedestrian, the screams of outrage will exceed any statistical reasoning.//
Speak for yourself. High-profile plane crashes do cause small short-term downturns in air travel - but economics and convenience always wins out.

From your link, TTT:
"Most of the self-driving vehicles involved in accidents were hit in the rear when they were traveling 5 miles per hour or slower. None were involved in very serious accidents, such as head-on collisions"
Anyway, at present these self driving vehicles have drivers in. I don't think there is enough data yet to draw any conclusions

the thing is bednobs I am at a disadvantage, I have worked most of my life in software development and we cant get a robot to make a cup of tea yet, well not without some pretty rigid pre conditions. So imagine letting a driverless car out there with all those variables. Here's a thought experiment. Get a complete stranger off the street, lock them in your kitchen and tell them to come out when they have made a cup of tea.(all they need isin the kitchen) Everything is un familiar to them but even the thickest person will emerge with a cup of tea. We cannot even begin to imagine programming a robot to do that. That's why I am sceptical.
We have self driving fork lift trucks, baggage handling trucks and self driving trains. The main thing stopping self driving cars from working is that they are bumped into by cars driven by humans on our roads and humans aaren't so predictable. Look ahead to the time when all the vehicles are self driving and it should work well.
bednobs: "in all honesty, we get it TTT: you don't like self diving vehicles" - nope, I love them but what we are doing is no where near that. I am worried about the safety of these things. I am concerned they will cause death and destruction on our roads, because software is not up to it and it is only as good as what it is told by sensors, which are also not up to it. When I can get in my car have it drive me round the country pubs and home again asleep on the back seat and I am not responsible for anything it does we can have automated vehicles. ie never!
