Extreme Weather Conditions Around The Globe

Whilst most of the US is in the grip of a Polar Vortex, Australia is experiencing record high temperatures.
If climate change / global warming is occurring why have temps in the US plummeted to record lows? I'm in no way suggesting that climate change isn't happening but it would be interesting to know what others think.

// We need to accept the weather changes naturally and learn to live and adapt to it. //
Except that the entire point of Anthropogenic Climate Change is that the latest weather extremes and global average temperature increases are partly driven by our own activity. Therefore we either can stop it, or at least -- more realistically -- try to mitigate it, by changing our practices.

Well that's the bit that is up for debate.
Personally I dont buy into the whole its our fault thing, maybe if it wasnt used as an excuse to tax the hell out of us I might have more sympathy even though it can't be proven beyond doubt.
If we really wanted to stop fossil fuels we could, but Governments dont want us to as the tax revenues will dry up. Personally I wish we would stop using them as its the pollution that I object to - and that can be proved.

One of the largest consumers of fossil fuels also has one of the lowest tax rates on their personal usage*, so I'm not sure that can be entirely right. Still, if you disagree with the reason for reducing fossil fuel usage but not the objective, then that can and should still be enough to agree to do something about it, which is the main thing.
*The US taxes petrol at the rate of about 30p a gallon currently; in the UK it's seven times that.
