Given a countrybthat split roughly half and half in the referendum, it strikes me there are two options for the Lib Dems: stick to their longstanding pro-EU stance, or abandon every principle they hold.
The Conservatives have managed to turn a working majority at the time of the referendum into a hybrid based on buying Irish votes, and we are moving no closer to a resolution on EU membership. Still they are asking for my vote on the basis of being "the only party that can get Brexit done", in a leaflet that says the only way to avoid the EU elections is to vote in them. Yeah, right.
Labour are not even able to function as an opposition, unable to decide whether they want to stay or leave, but toying with the idea of supporting the Conservatives to achieve a compromise that suits nobody, leaving the way clear for May to blame Labour for her being unable to manage her own party.
The Lib Dems seem to be the only party standing across the board who are offering a mandate for the 48% who voted to stay, or the vast majority who didn't vote to leave.
Their slogan sounds childish, but it only mirrors those of their rivals: "Vote leave for fifty years of poverty for most, but at least I will be better off, patriotically voting against my own country" springs to mind.
