The Conservative is slowly - perhaps not that slowly - destroying itself. You might not like Heseltine but he speaks for a constituency that the Tory party needs to accommodate if it’s to remain a force in British politics. Somehow it has got itself logjammed in the pursuit of an unobtainable version of Brexit and increasingly scared shitless - again - of Milko Farage (where are you now David Cameron?)
As a longtime opponent of the Tories I ought to be pleased but I’m not sure I am all that.

The difficulty is that we are facing increasingly poor choices. No effective leader of the government nor the opposition, and no serious replacements coming forward? We will end up like the US, choosing on the basis of who is the least bad option.

I can’t see how an election can be avoided fairly soon.
No matter who replaces the current PM the same problems will persist: a deal parliament won’t pass, but nor will it allow a no deal Brexit. And there is absolutely no chance of the EU reopening negotiations. I think there is a chance of a referendum on the deal post May. She didn’t want it because she’d have had to campaign for it when she would probably rather campaign to stay in the EU, but with a new header maybe ...
It won’t take much for mass resignations from the Tory parliamentary party and then an election would swiftly follow after a no confidence vote.
I can see in the circumstances why the otherwise sensible Rory Stewart is seriously advocating locking MPs in a room until they agree to agree on ... something. It really is that desperate.

I don’t think you read what I was saying ymb: of course the govt isn’t going to just call an election but a bust up among the Cons and they’ll be even less in control than they are now.

Even May's magic money tree is not fruitful enough to buy the continued DUP support that would give her a parliamentary majority. The Conservatives don't have the final say on how long this government lasts.
