Surely that's against EUSSR regs? Don't get me wrong, good idea, we should do it.

I don't like the way that the younger generation are so scornful and judgmental of older people. It never used to be like this years ago. When I was young we respected older people . Nowadays we might just as well be thrown on the scrapheap or put to death when we reach 80 years. National Service brought discipline, respect and a sense of pride in your country....

I didn’t say it was national service but it is something that some young people volunteer to do. Quite honestly, if the majority of older people on here a reflection of older people in general then they don’t to be respected by the younger generation (which they seem to expect just because they’ve managed not to die yet).
I could see an extension of any youth programme targetting the under-used reservoir of experience that is older citizens.
A few spring to mind for the position of concierge reporting directly, in a passive-aggressive way to their handlers.
They would of course be excused normal regular activities for the duration with their recognised deputies taking over pro tem.

Totally agree.. but it goes both ways.
People say respect is earned not given.. however i think for someone to be a decent human they need to have a degree of mutual respect of everything and everyone.
When people tarnish the whole youth with a big old sweeping statement, that respect goes out the window, so why should that level of respect be reciprocated?

Maybe I am the odd one out here. At approaching 74 years old I am almost certainly considered old by even the other old ones on this thread but I do not feel I am owed an ounce of respect just for being old. However, if I am ever shown any respect I take that as a compliment and hope I have somehow earned it, regardless from where it comes. I know more than one and more than two young people whom I would say I respect more than a number of their elders. I also know individuals old and young for whom I do not have a great deal of respect. Age does not in itself command respect, in my view. Those who are older and are judgemental of "youth/young people" are no better than young people mouthing off about "old farts/fogies" - both are displaying their less impressive talents.
