The government has done the right thing: support the ambassador while claiming to distance themselves from his assessment.
This will be understood by US diplomats in turn. Heaven knows what the US ambassador says about the British govt
The ambassador was just doing his job, very well from what I can see.

The Donald just confirms it with his pathetic reaction.
I disagree, ichkeria.
Supporting the ambassador just pees off Mr. Trump, and no matter what you think of him, it’s better to be chummy with him rather than have him throw a hissy fit.
Maybe we’ll find out what the US ambassador says when one of his emails gets leaked by some disgruntled employee.

I wonder how different the response on AB would have been had the same insults been made towards the previous President?
Not much, surely.
Same situation, same response, by and large.
If you allowed your life to be ruled by “not peeing off” Trump you wouldn’t leave yourself much room for manoeuvre
//Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Theresa May and said the US would no longer deal with the British ambassador to Washington...//

What would he do if he knew what other Ambassadors are likely calling him behind his back ?
Nobody is allowing their “life” to be ruled.
But why support Mr. Darroch so unequivocally? Perhaps a more diplomatic response would have been better. More fence sitting than off-peeing!

Very possibly they were, but the point is that they remained private. What's inappropriate about Trump's tweets is how public they are. Up until what our ambassador said was leaked then we never knew, and probably wouldn't even have cared. What he thought about the US President was secret, confidential, and only a small part of the picture used to shape our relationship with the US. What Trump tweets is public, and since he isn't a minor diplomatic official but the actual President, then what he says is bound to carry a great deal more weight in shaping US/UK relations.

"Downing Street has reaffirmed its "full support" for the UK's ambassador to the US after Donald Trump said he will no longer work with him."

…...would that be the same kind of full support that a football manager receives from his board of directors?
// your life to be ruled by “not peeing off” Trump//

the receiving country ( trump said he has been foisted on us) doesnt have a say-so in who gets to be ambassady and never has

there is here

even a photie of a swastika being paraded down Carlton House terrace where the German Embassy was - scroll down
wonder how it got leaked, who serves to gain by it...someone or some country may not want britain to be chummy with trump.

They could have been, but they weren't, shall we now move on?

The White House // "uniquely dysfunctional" and "divided" \\

That's a laugh. I don't think we are in a position to be calling anyone with the state of our own Houses of Parliament.

Yes, I know it's beside the point but I couldn't resist.
The ambassador hasn't done anything wrong. It's part of his job to make assessments like the one he did.

The problem is that someone leaked them when they're supposed to be secret.
The job of an ambassador is to provide his bosses with an honest opinion of the country he is ambassador too! That is what Sir Kit did frank and honest opinion
On the bright side it may adversely affect the health of the posturing oafish blowhard leading to a shortened term.

A man can hope.
//Why Is Trump Being Criticised//

Because Trump is Trump and, right or wrong, Trump is fair game. Any other president in office and this would be -and should be - an embarrassment to our government.
Trump is fair game because he sets himself up as a target with his reactionary tweets, Naomi. He's like a kid in a playground, taking his ball home because he wasn't the first one picked. The word 'insecurity' was used. So what does Trump do? Tweets that he doesn't know the ambassador (he so obviously does) and that no-one in America likes him anyway, so thmmer. Then he slags our PM off - and that's our prerogative, not his.
