It's a mistake to say that this is anything to do with "Trump is Trump". Ambassadors around the world, of all nations, tend to have dim views of their host country and the current administrations. To some extent that's almost their job. It would be unthinkable that the US Ambassador to the UK doesn't say more or less the same about our government (and maybe even with some justification, arguably). What's unfortunate about Sir Kim is that his comments were leaked -- and then, of course, Trump reacted as Trump always will, which is to say, he responds to criticism by confirming it.
Ken, you know he should be above all that and I know he should be above all that but he is who he is, he’s the ejected president, and frankly if anything is juvenile it’s the witch hunt that’s been going on since before he was elected in which no stone has been left unturned by the vitriolic torch bearers. Nevertheless he survives. Who’s the loser? Not him.
This is where the game of politics gets sticky.
As others have affirmed, most ambassadors have robust and not entirely complimentary views of the country with which they liaise - the difficulty occurs when, as in this case, such opinions are leaked to the wrong people.
The ambassador's views were clearly not meant to be heard by the US government, or the President, but they were, with predictable consequences.
The British government have been forced to back their man in order not to look like they can be bullied by the US, and fortunately, further damage is averted by his resignation, so everyone can calm down.
If President Trump is going to continue in his role, it's way past time that he realised that not everyone thinks he is as utterly fabulous as he thinks he is.
