//So basically, for saving towards a private pension when you retire ,you're screwed?// Such people get screwed all the time, bobbs. Those with no savings and who rely solely on the State Pension receive enormous amounts in the way of perks. Among the many are free dental treatment, additional pension if they have not accrued enough NI contributions and -...

If pensioners only have the basic state pension, they are almost guaranteed to get Pension Credit if they claim.
What about other single folk?
It's only the average price of a pint per week. I can live with that.
There is a hope the publicity will encourage more folk to claim the Pension Credit they're entitled to

The Corby, to that I'd say it should be scrapped entirely ,it's way past it's sell by date
Corby//What about other single folk?//
Are you serious?
"Bednobs, that was before the government passed the buck to the BBC"
so the BBC has never given this free perk - and now the country cant afford it so it's been passed back to them, and they don't want to afford it
I agree with Jackdaw, it's as cheap as chips for what we get from it.
DANNY, what about a single 65-year old for example or a 74-year old?
Several years ago I refused point blank to ever pay for a television license again, and I haven't.
The wife pays it.
Bednobs, at the time this was announced the BBC was allowed to increase the licence fee to offset the free licences.
//The decision comes four years after the government announced the BBC would take over the responsibility for providing free licences for over-75s by 2020 as part of the licence fee settlement//
Their being single doesn't hold up when, currently, any household with a 75-year old in it gets a free licence.
Corby //Their being single doesn't hold up when, currently, any household with a 75-year old in it gets a free licence.//
That should be scrapped unless all members of the household are 75 or older.
I thought you weren't happy with a privilege being withdrawn once given?
If you want to carry on in that vein then find someone else to pander to your facetiousness.
If your argument doesn't stand up to questioning, it's hardly my fault is it?
//Is there a particular reason why those of a certain age should receive free tv licences?//

Well either there is or there isn’t. If there is then all people of that certain age should receive one, if there isn’t then none of them should.

NJ,I'd give you best answer but I don't know how to, I'm rusty after being away for nearly 8 years , lol
The Labour Govt introduced this in 2000. The BBC has never paid it always the government and if it’s to continue then the government should continue to pay it.
Means testing is fair in theory expensive to run in practice.
Tho I’ve never understood the argument that “people don’t like to claim it”
We’re happy enough to receive it :-)
