Thailand is lovely but they are very strange when it comes to the Royal family, for obvious reasons.

I think I'll be emailing my friend in Bangkok - but she will be very circumspect in any reply. Going back to last year (before the coronation) I do know that there was general disquiet, but the new king's father was so very much loved that everyone hoped for the best.

I noted that one of the four medals she received was “most exalted order of the white elephant, special class”.

Having taken a new wife in May this year, one or other of his consorts is definitely a 'white elephant' !
