Awful way to die, no matter what or why,no one deserves to go like that, tragic
09:42 Wed 23rd Oct 2019
An Irishman has been arrested for murder. The lorry entered the mainland at Holyhead after crossing from the Irish border.
How naïve - These workers could not just 'swan in' to the UK. They need money to get here in the first place and somewhere to live. 'Gang' bosses recruit workers in poor EU countries with a promise of work and a place to live. Its these bosses that pay the lorry driver . When the workers arrive they are bundled away to work sometimes 16 hours a day for nothing in dirty conditions. None of them deserved to die like that, its horrendous.

Pure speculation. But it seems they came off a ship in a dodgy Irish port and were heading for the continent, possibly Bulgaria.
It will be interesting to see what transpires.
In the meantime, RIP.
Spicerack -I seriously doubt they were trying to escape to Bulgaria...
APG, their nationality is as yet unknown - and no one has said they deserved to die like that.
Maybe the court of Answerbank could recess until more facts emerge.
Spicerack, the lorry wasn't travelling to Bulgaria. As I read it, it came from Europe via a port in Ireland and arrived here at Holyhead.
Naomi and you presumed they had 'paid their money so took their chances'. Also pure speculation.
Here is a little more info re routes into the UK and chronology. The vehicle entered Holyhead from Ireland on Saturday!

They weren't necessarily told the truth about their destination, polly.

I didn't read that it came from Europe. It seemed to be heading for the channel ports.
from the link:
Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner said “We believe the lorry is from Bulgaria and entered the country at Holyhead on Saturday 19 October and we are working closely with our partners to investigate."
APG, you presumed they had 'paid their money so took their chances'. Also pure speculation.//

Not entirely. The article mentions people smuggling.

Lorries and containers seldom come from the same place. But let's not fall out. I was only speculating.
The degree of callousness and sheer shocking inhumanity shown by some on this thread beggars belief - they were PEOPLE for Christ’s sake - have you no empathy or conscience at all?
It could be smuggling or People trafficking. Both are mentioned in the article.

If they are being trafficked, then that is truly awful. Given they died assuming from malnutrition and or lack of air, i suspect it's a more sinister motive, than simply trying to get people refuge.

It's not been said if there are so many women or men, only that one is a teenager.
All I can think of was what those poor people must have gone through. Am wondering what nationalities they were. A dreadful thing to have happened.
Sunny-Dave I totally agree, its the first few responses on this thread that are 'telling'. Now people seems to be backtracking. I am of course guessing at the moment but think they were probable innocent people perhaps looking for a better life with a promise of a job and accommodation. Horrible.
"People trafficking is a vile and dangerous business. This is a big investigation for Essex Police."
Whatever the circumstances, 39 people are dead, a bit of respect for them would not be amiss . RIP .
