I thought that UK Border Force and Douanes had portable detectors for carbon monoxide. They are probably quite expensive but it may be worth having a a couple of officers on each ferry. I appreciate there are many lorries on a ferry but the crossing isn't that quick. Just shows another hole in our border system though.

My mistake. I should,of course, said CO2 detectors as used in Zeebrugge at about $1000 a pop. The size of a mobile phone.

If I were a one man operation or owned a fleet of inter continental haulage trucks it would be in my own interest to invest in a detector/s. Bearing in mind the financial penalties for carrying illegal stowaways pp . A quick scan by the driver before, during and on embarkation would be in his own interest and help prevent this tragedy before it occurred.
