I thought that UK Border Force and Douanes had portable detectors for carbon monoxide. They are probably quite expensive but it may be worth having a a couple of officers on each ferry. I appreciate there are many lorries on a ferry but the crossing isn't that quick. Just shows another hole in our border system though.

retrocop, I'm sure they do have portable detectors but it seems security is much tighter at some ports than others.

Just heard on radio that the lorry (with refrigerated container) has been there since Saturday so maybe someone was meant to meet it and drive it to it's next destination? Or maybe the driver himself has discovered his 'cargo' dead and done a runner. Pure speculation on my behalf, of course.

My mistake. I should,of course,said CO2 detectors as used in Zeebrugge at about $1000 a pop. The size of a mobile phone.

If I were a one man operation or owned a fleet of inter continental haulage trucks it would be in my own interest to invest in a detector/s. Bearing in mind the financial penalties for carrying illegal stowaways pp . A quick scan by the driver before,during and on embarkation would be in his own interest and help prevent this tragedy before it occurred.

Terrible way to die and I feel terrible for the ambulance crew that found them.
Lorry was from Bulgaria but that does not mean that is where the 'passengers' were from, the driver was from Northern Ireland not southern as had been suggested originally.
