//I can't see how anyone believes that bringing up children is ever the easier or lazier option!// I don't believe anybody is suggesting it is the "easier option". Such people will churn out kids whatever their circumstances. They are unlikely to be able (or willing) to earn enough to keep them so benefits is a suitable choice. Unlike working people, more...

cigs, and scratchcards?
I'll save the goggle-eyed loons the bother and put fags, booze and Sky TV.
That usually covers it from Olympus.
//shoes now sent to children in more than 43 countries, primarily in Asia, Africa and eastern Europe.//

Perhaps the problem is this country is exaggerated.... but there is an election looming.
I'm sure it varies family to family, people are always told to prioritise the roof over their head, then there's food and utilities. Children grown out of shoes so quickly and cheap isn't always best.

Of course some are better at budgeting than others too.
Bills, rent, food.
How far do you think £20 for the eldest and £13 for subsequent children goes?
Most people on benefits have a bigger TV than I could afford.
Webbo asked CB. Most parents get it in work or not. Working people can be just as poor if not poorer than those claiming benefits.
What has the size of someone's TV got to do with it?
You can earn up to £50,000 pa before any possible reduction to CB.

I presume those struggling are in the lowest earnings bracket or not working.
When I was on benefits, for some reason, the Child Benefit was paid a day later than my Income Support. That was a very welcome tenner. I certainly couldn’t afford to put it away to save up for shoes.

I didn’t have a massive telly either.
Will that cliche ever stop being trotted out?

Far enough to ensure they are properly shod. It's not supposed to provide for their every need. That their parents' job. Quite why the government finds it necessary to shell out this money at all is quite beyond me.
Love the programme "Can't pay take it away"

They all have enormous televisions.
Are all the debtors on benefit?
Mostly, yes.
I can fair imagine you enjoying that, of course many on that show are chancers and not people genuinely on their uppers.
You can buy kids shoes in Primark for a fiver.
When my kids were younger I bought shoes from local market, catalogue returns, £4.00 a pair.
when i was a child i had handme downs, that included underwear socks
etc..our mum made stews and other meals you could have two days in a row with a little tweaking, she would get a soup bone from the butchers boil it, we had broth and bread, chicken carcass also boiled
nothing wasted, b/w telly and a radiogram.. we thought we were doing rather well..i do remember using an old pair of socks for gloes in winter...but we were happy.
I'm sure some do buy cheap shoes, also some schools have stocks of used uniform etc to purchase very cheaply.
