Yes. Trident exists as a so-called deterrent to other nuclear powers attacking through "Mutually Assured Destruction", or MAD - the acronym is apposite. It is ridiculously expensive, and the idea that the Russians (or whoever) would nuke Scotland / rUK if Trident were abandoned is about as loony as it gets.
No. The cost is enormous, but it's essential to maintain our deterrent. There are some dangerous countries in this world who wouldn't hesitate to use nuclear weapons if we didn't have the means to hit back. Really sad though.
