They have ONLY been released while their cases are reviewed ! If the review shows there is something to justify it, they will be rearrested ! They are NOT totally free , their are still restrictions on where they can go and who they can see or talk to . They also MUST report in at a Police station every day !! They are ONLY free ON LICENCE !! . That is a LONG way from full freedom !
Eddie, they are as free and unencumbered by restrictions as you are. They can only be subject to the conditions you mention if they are on police bail (and only then if such conditions are deemed necessary). And the law says they cannot be kept on bail for longer than 28 days.
Doesn’t seem like a scandal as such, but certainly not what you want to hear is it... good to know about though.
Austerity cuts in action.
The Conservatives want to cut spending so they let out nearly 100,000 criminals to save money, gambling that the odd murder will cost less than the keep of the Crims in prison.
It must be working because more and more very dangerous people are being allowed back into the community.
If you are rich you can be chauffeured everywhere by car or taxi. then you are OK. The rest of us who use the streets or public transport are less safe - even risking our lives.

it's nice to know these people are among us, not

the law must be an ass then if it's happy to let go of so many.
//Austerity cuts in action//

Pity your lot spent all the money to cause the austerity then eh?

Except what you write is a load of old Pony.

REad what NJ has written. Excellently put although you may find the truth a tad unpalatable as clearly you are an advocate of banging up with no Court appearance for months on end.
emmie, did you at first think that the people released had already been in court and found guilty?
Question Author
hc, yes i did, i should have read the whole piece, apologies.
No need to apologise, emmie. I blame the wording in the report and the 'scandal' headline.
I think we all know there's big problems out there, but the media will scrap the barrel at times to make it look a lot worse.
Question Author
according to the BBC there are nearer 100 thousand, so they missed off a few thousand for some reason.
Gomit, this report is not about criminals being released early from their prison sentences.
This report says 93000 suspects have been released since 2017. Call that three years as 2019 is nearly over.
I would like to know:
1. How many had the charges dropped
2. How many have been to court and found not guilty
3. How many were found guilty and given a non-custodial sentence.
4. How many were found guilty and sentenced to prison
5. How many are still waiting for their trial
6. How many, on average, were released and walking the streets in
one month. 93000 is a huge number and it equals 31000 a year;
2583 a month. I would like confirmation of my calculations.
Question Author
hc, so would I

Please engage brain before typing. You need to read what this thread is about. The people involved are not criminals nor would they be kept in prison. They are people who are allegedly of interest to the police in the course of their enquiries. They may end up not even being charged, let alone convicted. There is no chance whatsoever that they would otherwise be in prison. You cannot be held in police custody for more than 24 hours without being charged (longer in some exceptional cases where the custody has to be authorised by a court) and only a court can remand you in custody after charging.
