only a few days in and all the contractors are pointing their fingers at each other and pulling "the shaggy defence" - and now asking for legal immunity For Funks Sake

what chance this not descending into a mire of acrimony and the bereaved getting any closure?

I attended an interesting seminar yesterday morning, the main strand of which was how the Grenfell Disaster (and the findings/reports) would impact on the wider Design and Construction community.

It was well attended and there was a large group of senior Fire Officers present.

I found out some very interesting things and can quite understand why there is so much finger-pointing and blame-shifting. It really will take the Judgement of Solomon to decide who should shoulder the blame....
Are you involved in the construction industry?
All those who were privy to the emails that were floating around should be held responsible, imho. All were aware of how the cladding would react in a blaze yet none had the decency to warn would be users. I really do hope these people suffer the very worst nightmares every time they lay down and close their eyes.
Yes, but on the Design side.
People living in highrise blocks that are still clad with this stuff, especially those who own their own accommodation, are really suffering with this. Some blocks employ people to patrol the corridors at night, checking for fires!
Well done Jack.
Question Author
JTH, will any of the seminar content be made available?
JTH, did you get into discussions about relevant buildings (over 18m high) and the requirement to have virtually every element of the building constructed from non combustible materials (even extract vents etc)?
mushroom25 - I doubt it, as I say the Grenfell disaster was the catalyst for much of the detail of the Seminar but there was much else besides.

ZM - Yes we did. And the very realistic likelihood that the Govt. will reduce this to 11 Storeys.
Do you mean 11 meters, JTH? Pretty onerous in terms of design, isn't it? I imagine vent axia and the like are furiously coming up with new designs for vents which comply.
I must be careful about what I say here. We know the owner of a firm which tendered for the refurbishment job at Grenfell (that sort of contract is their main area of business). Their tender quoted for correctly fireproofed cladding and its fitting to accepted standards. They lost the contract by a biggish sum. Someone, some committee, must have gone for the cheapest option, and it must have been a lot cheaper, without understanding the issues. The owner is hoping to be called to give evidence - but doubts it will happen.
Why don't they knock down the block , instead of
refurbishing ?

I certainly wouldn't want to be re-housed / housed in it .
However , i suppose there is a lack of accommodation in the area for people
I think jourdain means when it was originally clad with the non fireproof material, Baz.
zm - That's the badger! 11 metres.... :o)

I'd also be asking Hotpoint/Electrolux, etc. quite how one of their appliances managed to fail so spectacularly as to have caused the blaze, in the first place.

The entire tragedy seemed to be a conflux of 'million-to-one' events all happening in the same place at the same time.
The worst disasters are always a perfect storm of otherwise disparate incidents.
no shortage of Hotpoints going up in flames, it seems

Gently lift the carpet, sweep the dirt way under. Move along, nothing to see here.
Ive never heard of a fridge catching fire.Shouldnt one of the main points of the inquiry be about the cause of the fire. There are quite a few rumours going about.
