Why 'Come out' because as sure as boots is boots some kindly soul you thought was a friend will out you at the drop of a hat or the media will snap you getting out of a cab late one night.
Then the cry is 'why wasn't he honest with the viewers'.

It SHOULDN'T be a big thing, but people love knowing other people's business, especially if they're celebs. Sadly, if someone had found out and gone to the tabloids, it would've been a big scandal, by coming out this way, Schofield can better control the information. He preempted any possible leaks.
According to someone on another thread, religious people care... but they care about a lot of things. Couples living together out of wedlock ... abortion ... but no one else panders to their foibles. They just get on with their lives - and that's what gay people should do. No need to call attention to themselves by making a fuss.
There's an expectation that you're heterosexual by default unless you declare otherwise.
Coming out is just making that declaration.
It takes some longer than others to do it. In Philip Schofields case it's more of a thing because it's taken him 40 years, during which time he's effectively been pretending not to be.
