Rip Roy Hudd

With the C-word having knocked nearly all other news off the BBC News website, it's left to our local rag to report on the passing of one of Aunty Beeb's longest-serving geniuses:

I was never a great fan of much of what passed for comedy on BBC Radio 2, preferring the satirical stuff that was largely on Radio 4. However 'The News Huddlines' was always an exception for me. It could be hard-hitting at times and was always good for a laugh.

Roy Hudd lived in a village just up the road from me. The last time I saw him was in 2016, when he was handing out the prizes at a local 'open garden' event. He was clearly 'getting on a bit' even then but he was as funny and as quick-witted as ever.

If heaven exists, there will angels falling off their clouds through laughter tonight.

That was, indeed, one of his classic lines, JimF. He could also be relied upon, whenever giving a public speech of any sort, to come out with a really tired old joke and then anxiously look around the crowd, saying "They're coming towards us, folks!" ;-)

This is a sad day, Buen. How I loved the News Hudlines, the very best of its genre. Roy was a man who was always interesting to listen to, his stories of the old times were legendary. I will miss his amazing contribution to entertainment.

Always very funny and interesting. He will be sadly missed.
