youngmafbog 08.50, ...."guns are required to survive..." - I was trying to understand what you are referring to and reasoned that it is remote homesteads in woodlands, etc. that you have in mind, elsewhere you dial 911 and wait. These are a truly minuscule proportion of all dwellings in the country and limited to some distinct states and areas within them, and there you have occasional (very occasional) confrontations with dangerous wildlife. The overwhelming majority of the population has absolutely no rational need for guns - unless you consider the risk from other gun-toting people including the police. Take the guns out of society entirely and you are left with some thousands of people who need them (see above) and they can be licensed, as well as recreational users/hunters if you decide to allow that. If you find those who actually need to hunt for food because otherwise they would starve (and such folk do exist) then you do not license people in urban areas or those within reach of food shops, you organise society in such a way that they can buy their food in shops like you and I do (i.e. social support if/as necessary).
I accept that the USA is not like anywhere else, but that does not mean it is the best/most correct or even just better. I would argue that the gun thing there is a major social ill - but then we stray into a discussion akin to that about religion. It's not only Middle Eastern countries/nations that are needing to step outside the frame and have a radical/rational rethink.
