Not sure what for though.
Is there a list of banned items?
Should the police not be charging supermarkets for selling prohibited items, rather than some poor unsuspecting customer who probably isn’t aware of what is and what isn’t illegal.

The police statement that they are not going to search shopping trolleys for non-essential items is reassuring. However, they might like to take advice from the CPS before they consider such a move. The legislation sets out the types of stores which may open. But it does not provide any restrictions on what those stores may sell. So you see Tesco's and others...

If it's for sale in the supermarket, why can't we buy it? How does this affect coronavirus? Mad!
Seems like it anyway (1984 that is)
how did "We will NOT, at this stage, start to marshal supermarkets and checking the items in baskets and trolleys" turn into your headline gromit? it;s the exact opposite
If they want to keep the peace it would be a bad move.
After his inept performance in the case of poor Harry Dunn I suppose he needs to justify his position somehow.
FAKE NEWS, based upon media mis-reporting!

Just what I was thinking, bednobs.

Perhaps Gromit is Jeremy Vine?
18:50 thank goodness for that.

Thanks for your Business Insider link Roy.

// Adderley later backtracked and withdrew his threat to impose the checks. //

After it was pointed out that the UK's emergency coronavirus legislation law does not authorise police officers to check people's shopping.

I find it worrying that such numptiness extends to senior police as well as some members of the general public
Who deems what is non essential?

For the alcoholic the vodka and beer might be essential.

For the mental health of some people keeping busy is their relief so why ban diy goods?

Children deserve treats and so do adults.

If it is in the shop then it is right to be able to buy it.
// I can imagine Naomi. It is going to be anarchy ......Will they intercept supermarket delivery vans? - Or re bomb Slough" (*)

in Michael winner voice - "oh calm down, calm down ladies - I am sure the chief constable will allow you to hand wash your knickers and briefs without molestation in a curtained kitchen- lets me fair!"

(*) JOhn Betjeman celebrated the destruction of SLough in a poem of 1940
^ What??
Oh do shut up Peter.
Another good reason not to censor rumour and misinformation (I realise Gromit was unaware it had been rescinded)
Best to have these things discussed and debunked
It would make a refreshing change if one of the police forces in the UK announced that it was directing its full resources to catching criminals – rather than stopping people buying Easter eggs.
False news AGAIN. Deliberately agitating the apprehensive.
In any event the (only slightly) less ridiculous course of action would have been to stop the shops selling them in the first place . I think this is what some police were trying to do
(I realise Gromit was unaware it had been rescinded)

Or that's why he never provided a link.

I have now watched the Press Conference. The reporting of it was not fake news. He said the 3 week grace period was over, and that trolley and basket searches were coming if people don’t change their behaviour. He also said his force would uphold the law (but seemed to be unaware that trolley and basket searches are not lawful).
The fact that his force had to issue a clarification, means he clearly got it wrong the first time.
