I said it on another thread, VE Day, for me at least, is about celebrating those who never saw the end of the war, those who laid down their lives to give us the freedom we take for granted now.

It's not about celebrating victory, but remembering the past and assuring the legacy of those who fought survive.

VE Day is to celebrate the end, the winning, of the war in Europe. .Remembrance day is to commemorate those who died in the winning of that war.

Another load of politically correct bilge that, if we want to be perceived as ‘woke’ we’re all expected to embrace. Well 'woke' isn't as 'woke' as it thinks it is. VE Day isn’t about multiculturalism, or the NHS, or about dustmen. It is about victory - a victory hard fought 75 years ago - and one we should, in homage to our forebears, be immensely proud of. No, Zoe Williams, let’s not drop the VE Day nostalgia. Let’s just remind ourselves that for our tomorrow they gave their today - in more ways than one.

Diddlydo, the Germans initiated the war in order to dominate Europe, and numerous other countries allied together in order to prevent this. The Allies won, the Germans lost...(However, for some reason, they, the Germans seem to dominate Europe anyway:))

I will, I’ll be out there celebrating and thanking those who died so we could be free, I’ll be playing music of the time in my street , it’s a time for gratitude and also a time for people to come out in the fresh air and to join with their communities in being thankful

Shouldn't the end of any war be a cause for celebration and commemoration? The Germans began Volkstrauertag (memorial day) in 1948.

Trust the awful Zoe Williams to denigrate the celebrations and praise the multiculturalism experiment that we have had foisted on us. I wonder how many of the majority Asian populations of Birmingham, Leicester, Bradford, Luton etc etc will be joining in giving thanks for those who gave their lives to keep this country free for them to live here, follow their religions and prosper.

Although there's a nice bit of irony there that those who most want to celebrate us standing togetber with our allies from Europe (and other continents) to crush the German threat are the same ones who most wanted us to separate ourselves from those same European allies when Brexit raised it's ugly head.

To be fair Brainiac, there were many Muslims fighting alongside us during the war, especially from North Africa. VE Day should be a celebration for them too.

Mr S watches all this sort of thing with interest. He's very impressed with Captain Tom and quite enjoyed the programme about Vera Lynn earlier this evening.
He's quite civilised considering he's a German.

My brother died suddenly while on holiday abroad almost exactly a year ago. Last week his wife sent me a large bundle of family photographs, which also contained a tin in which were my father's five war medals (RAF). I had no idea he had any war medals. Tomorrow I shall put them out on my desk and think of him and all the men and women who fought for us and for our freedom. Shame on Zoe Williams.

My grandfather's medalsfrom his naval service (he served on one of of the UK's minesweepers) are in a naval museum in Suffolk, Brainy. I kind of wish I had them still.

Mozz at 22:50, no irony. If VE day had never happened there would be no Brexit for you to mourn because there would be no EU. Count your blessings that, thanks to the enormous sacrifices made all those years ago, we are free to make our democratic choices.
