The Cummings Effect
Our daughter has hitherto refused to meet my husband and me together because "It's against the rules". She is now incandescent with rage about Cummings and is now prepared to bend the rules. is this the effect that DC and Boris want?

I find that hard to understand assuming it's true and not just a political swipe.
Haven't you boasted about ignoring one way systems in supermarkets intended to help social distancing? Now that makes some incandescent with rage.
If she is so desperate to do it she can do it as you all know no-one will arrest her, but she must follow social distancing and should do it in a public place. Surely as someone who tells us sometimes how intelligent you are compared to most on here you can work out a way to do it. The guidance is there to help you but if you are happy to increase the risks then it's a free country

If she is so desperate to do it she can do it as you all know no-one will arrest her, but she must follow social distancing and should do it in a public place. Surely as someone who tells us sometimes how intelligent you are compared to most on here you can work out a way to do it. The guidance is there to help you but if you are happy to increase the risks then it's a free country

In seriousness, I can understand it. People have bent over backwards to adhere to social isolation laws, staying away from friends and family for months now. They see one of the people behind the policy not only break that advice, but be flagrantly unapologetic about doing so.
"Incandescent with rage" is a massive overreaction, and quite likely a Diddlism (an exaggeration to try to score political points), but it I'd been effected like that, I'd be pished off too.

Cummings’ ‘crime’ is debatable, but almost any employer will tell you that in order to retain the services of a valuable employee diplomacy is often prudent.
Okay, let’s say Boris concedes to this hysterical attempt at mob rule and fires a man he clearly thinks does a valuable job. It would certainly succeed in appeasing the permanently offended and the holier than thou but if, in the opinion of those in the know - and that’s neither you nor me, diddly - it would be detrimental to the country’s best interests, just what purpose would it serve other than to allow you and your cohorts an element of snugness? In reality, achieving the self-righteous satisfaction you demand may very well render the government’s task in unspeakably difficult times even more difficult but since it wouldn’t affect your life one iota I see no justification whatsoever in giving your indignant outpourings the slightest consideration

FF - let's get a few facts straight. Re the one-way system in some supermarkets - I said I hadn't been into a supermarket with such a system but that IF I did and IF I only wanted a few things, I would not be prepared to trudge up and down every aisle. That hasn't actually applied as the supermarket I use is more sensible.
Re my daughter refusing to meet both of us in a public park/place. At the beginning Raab said that people could meet both their parents at once with social-distancing. He then had to retract this as the rule stated that you could only meet ONE person at a time, so no, meeting both parents together was not permitted.
Re DC himself - how very short-sighted of him (no joke intended) and his wife not to have thought about child-care in London before exploiting a loophole in the rules and driving to Durham. I wonder how many motorway gantries he passed en route with the message "Stay at Home etc etc" - did these have no effect on him?
But worst of all, his drive to Barnard Castle to "test his vision for driving" was the ultimate in insane and criminal actions - yes, I use the word advisedly as it's a criminal offence to drive with impaired eyesight. What if he had been involved in an accident, even if it wasn't his fault?
Boris's repeated mantra in the liaison committee yesterday was "Time to move on" (from the DC affair) - we could have moved on if DC had resigned or been sacked by Boris. As it stands, most of the nation is not prepared to forgive or forget including a growing and significant number (60+) of Tory MPs (list of names available in the Guardian).
My husband has put the DC affair up with the Profumo Affair on the scandal-scale. Enough said - for now.
