comentators do not rely on the shirts bobbi. They've been doing commentary long before names were on shirts, still do in rugby.

Just as well TTT ?
I thought it was against FA rules to have political symbols on football shirts. Weren't eyebrows raised when some players had poppies a year or so ago?
Question Author
Yes bhg, you’re right
Back in the days "when I were but a lad" (and dinosaurs ruled the Earth), commentators relied upon shirt numbers to identify players, as players' names weren't emblazoned upon them.

I reckon that they might just still be able to do so!

They'll still have their squad numbers visible, Bobbi. Any commentator worth his salt should be able to cope.
and you had to buy a programme every match to see who was playing as the shirts were numbered 2 to 11 (occasionally the goalie had 1).
The wearing of poppies wasn't against FA rules but EUFA or FIFA rules.
good point BHG but I suspect the FA will be bullied into accepting this.
Don't know. But I'm so glad I hate football and will not be watching!
PS: People might not take that much notice of match commentators anyway:

Many years ago, a mate of mine got called upon at very short notice to provide reports on a Doncaster Rovers home game for listeners to BBC Radio Sheffield. He didn't know the name of a single Doncaster player, yet alone of their opponents, but he was handed a match programme as he settled into his commentary seat, meaning that he'd be able to identify each player from the number on his shirt.

The studio handed over to him periodically throughout the first half and he provided what he thought were accurate updates on the state of play. It was only at half-time though that he realised the programme he'd been given was a fortnight old. Not only was the Doncaster team significantly different by then but he'd been getting their opponents wrong (and, obviously, not a single one of their player's name right) for 45 minutes. Not one listener had phoned into Radio Sheffield to complain!
I don't watch football , because it doesn't interest me - I wouldn't say I hate it though

Why do you hate football - hate is a strong word isn't it - what particularly do you hate about it ?

Just asking
Question Author
What I know about it can be written on the back of a stamp but I still enjoy watching it
What I hope they will do is give this nonsensical personal aggrandisement the attention it richly deserves, which is absolutely none at all, and ignore it, and never make any reference to it now or in the future.
Well personally I don’t like or watch football so I don’t really care what they put on the shirts.

But as with everything else in life I think there should be consistency.

Are political messages allowed? Are personal messages allowed?

If yes fine. If no then don’t.

To jump on the bandwagon of a political movement (especially an organisation set up based on a lie) is really quite sad.

I really don’t think a great deal will come of all this In the end. As far as I am aware, there is no law that says a black person cannot live, work and vote in this country. As far as I am aware, there is no law that specifically singles out black people for less favourable treatment. As far as I am aware there plenty of laws on equality.

I am not saying that all this means there is no discrimination. Because that would be ludicrous. But there is no systemic racism. Only racism of individuals. And that perhaps is the area that can make most headway.

They'll do what they've tended to do in the past.
Ramble on about past games punctuated with the odd shout of the name of a particular player who comes within 50 yards of goal.

Who can forget ROONEY! or KANE!? Happy times indeed.
I'm with jourdain at 15:24!
Nowadays, commentators can just touch their screens and the name of the player comes up on it!
Will diving and cheating start right away or at least give a respectability to the beautiful game for the time of wearing this on the shirts .Wont happen but nice thought .
Previous comment about political slogans is valid.
ALL lives matter has been subsumed in favour of political correctness and virtue signalling.
(Nod nod, yes me too, yes I agree, yes I apologise for not being black).
Surely this contravenes human rights legislation?
