if you traveled by train with 40 people in the carriage from say Birmingham to Leicester then on a bus with 20 people from the station worked in an office with twelve people and then traveled back .
how many would be traced and how many would have to isolate ?

this is quite interesting - but doesnt answer the question

https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/06/19/1004190/uk-covid-contact-tracing-app-fiasco/

see above - it depends
contact tracing is only one generation - a contact of a contact is NOT traced
the office is NOT gonna be twelve - bit uvva squeeze to get them all within two metres. very cosy. - but they would qualify - prolonged contact in time. But it is not everyone in the building ....not the tea lady

and yes I agree it wd be wasy to get to 60m contacts if you case the net too wide. we actually know how infections spread on transport - from the TB case on an aircraft - only those beside her, fore and aft ( donut) were infected.

thank you I was just wondering if it was a complete waste of money and so far from what I have read it seams to be
My understanding is that a person only becomes a 'contact' if they've been within 2 metres of an infected person for 15 minutes or longer.

So that would rule out people whom the infected person merely passed on a train or bus to get to a seat (which was more than 2 metres away from then) and people in the office who sat more than 2 metres away from him/her.
On my opinion it’s a complete waste of time. Originally the idea was that anyone could declare themselves ill by recording symptoms they might not be Covid 19. Now I believe it’s only people who test positive who are supposed to give contact details of others. Should they remember/know who they are.
But that at least is more sensible. Without some sort of electronic tracking (ie an app)I can’t see it can be very effective though.
