Labour have existed for 120 years, they've had 5 prime minsters and only 3 have won a general election. (Tory lite Tony doesn't count). So with that appalling record who actually supports them?
I don’t think you can count Tony Blair, because he appealed to many of the right of centre and obtained many of their votes. He was an attractive alternative. He spoilt it by entering into an illegal war, but prior to that he was an attractive alternative for disaffected right of centre traditional Tory voters. So to describe him as Labour (the Labour that...
selling off the council houses at a knock down price
making it almost impossible to afford to go on strike and pay your new mortgage
saving a fortune on policing the picket lines
saving a fortune not giving a decent pay rise
making a fortune with increased /continuous production
Clearly the benefit to society, most of which are those working for a wage, of being able to withdraw labour is to ensure there's one method of applying pressure on those wanting to use them, in order to achieve a decent, fair, deal, and not have to just accept whatever is offered, and lump it.
DD 20:16, bang on, BA. TLT had to steal the Tory's clothes to get through the door. Real Labour have not won an election since 1974 and probably won't ever again.
DD: "For a start he admired Thatcher, and whilst it’s true she was our best PM since the war, ‘proper’ Labour people hate her even now; it’s nuts and wrong to do so, but they still do. " - yep bang on once more, must stick in the craw of the noo Labour luvvies that the first thing St Tony did after getting the keys to No 10 was invite TGL round for a one to one!
If you purely look at Westminster then Labour just has a role in opposition, particularly since it's decline in Scotland. But if you look at (say) the Welsh sennedd and large councils (particularly in cities) then Labour is a major player, as are the much-derided Lib-Dems, Greens etc.
ich, if I was a Labour supporter, looking forward, I'd be wondering how we are ever going to win an election, looking back I'd be wondering why we have so few election victories in 120 years. Then I'd look inward and wonder if we are what the public want. Then I'd look outwards and determine that the public really want Tories and then I'd become Tories. St Tony realised that was the only way. They probably should change their name to something less socialist and then change their party to something less socialist. Maybe they'll become electable at some point. Real Labour is no longer electable, at least whilst those that remember them live.
The older generation of Tory voters won't live forever, and the younger voters won't put up with the current incompetent Tory leadership for long. Labour will win again, but it may not be in our lifetime.
Thatcher did so much damage to the Country, and her own party that it kept the Tories in Opposition for a decade . My question is how many years will they be in opposition after this imbie and his puppet master have finished.
// If Thatcher was that good , why did her own Mps oust her//
because at that time they thought she was not a winner
A German commentator said the Con Party of the UK was the best at retaining power ( the party not the person) over the last 150 y
