well, who'd a thought it? everything shuts at 10pm so everyone gets turned out on to the streets, into ubers and on to buses trains and tubes. no possibility of social distancing!

so instead of getting touchy feely in a late night bar, everyone now gets touchy feely on their way home, net result - the virus spreads as if there had been no curfew. did our politicos not think of this at all?

How do you know that?
//drunken idiots and druggies filling our A&E departments day and night//
How do you know that, too?
Just before the pandemic started I was with Husband in hospital. I saw possibly one or two men who might have been injured under the influence of alcohol.

NJ @18.52 I'm not loading anything on the back of covid, that can only be you're excuse for not wanting to accept that the UK has a massive problem with alcohol, that's the main attraction for most youngsters who go abroad to get stoned out of their tiny heads for two weeks, then our NHS carry the cost of their stupidity.

I'm not refusing to accept that a number of people in the UK have an alcohol problem. But that's not the reason that pubs and restaurants have been told to close at 10pm and it has nothing to do with this question.
Feel free to start a thread about that and I'll happily contribute. Your starting point might be that since that problem exists and since you see a 10pm pub curfew as an effective remedy we should lobby our MPs to make it permanent. But I wouldn't do that for two reasons: 1. It will not cure the problem and 2. Don't give Parliament ideas. It took over eighty years to reverse the "temporary" opening hours restrictions introduced during the First World War. Many people enjoy going out late into the evening. Just because you think they should not be allowed to do so is not justification to prevent them.

I don't have a problem with people enjoying themselves, but that's not were it stops. Like I've said before there's a high percentage now that see enjoying themselves as just getting drunk, and some are half way there before even leaving home. I never said that closing the pubs would be a cure for covid, just an attempt to try and reduce the infection rate. Some people party at home, then decide to go out late night clubbing, this at present now can't be done for the moment. Whatever way you look at it, its got to reduce the footfall at night, plus all the other problems that arise from late night drinking. The fools can demonstrate as much as they like in the streets like they did last week after leaving the pubs at 10pm but this will only achieve further prolonged restrictions, or total closure of the pubs. The 10pm restrictions in my view have come into force for two reasons. 1. Alcohol is the main fueling agent for stupidity. 2. To help try and control the spread of the virus for the time being, and the latter can't be done with any amount of success unless we deal with the stupidity, and yes its a shame that such idiots spoil it for everyone else that just enjoys a normal night out.
