Nice to see that the government have changed their minds and erred on the side of decency in allowing disadvantaged kids free school meals over the festive season.

Well done Boris. There's hope for you yet.

The problem is this has already been paid for. Personally I would be happier with this if it was also accompanied by an investigation into why this is happening and the actual scale of the problem.

Excellent news.
Well done Boris.
Well done General Public, not Boris
Good news.

Don't be so unreasonable Canary. It would've been easy for the Tories to dig their heels in and double down. It takes a better person to abmit they were wrong and do the right thing.
That is good news, but it’s also crap news that some people are in such a situation that they needs this help.
It's this covid stuff, sherr ( vert bad in my neck of the woods with job loses ect ).
Paying for the same thing twice is hardly 'the side of decency'. Would you feel decent if the supermarket got you to pay twice for your groceries ?
Yes, well done the Govt for allowing some parents to abrogate their responsibility for feeding their children from the child benefits they already receive.
Deskdiary - what about the poor parents who have lost their jobs and may lose their house - do you want their children to starve?
Free, means free to the recipient, it doesn't mean nobody pays.

getting the bus home from work in the centre of Bristol for the last two weeks every night during the rush hour I see mums with mums get on board with kids eating McDonalds or crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks and the kids sit down with a smart phone whilst the mum struggles with numerous bags of christmas shopping, i didn't see any poor starving kids.

Genuine people should be helped, not everyone.

I agree, and this was my disagreement with NJ, should the genuinely needy be sacrificed in order to stop those chancers from milking the system. He says that they should, I disagreed. A government should be judged (amongst other things) by how it treats it's most vulnerable citizens.

well
Well done Marcus. There's hope for you yet.

we have had poor footballers ( no - not poor at football silly!) and black footballers
but none who get up and do (something beside football or look good)

well done Marcus
marcus for parliament !
no we cant do anything because chancers may just benefit
just another day at AB benefits office

but hey I bet the two faced chancers who say this get benefits for themselves and their kin - - oh boy!
Glad to see this happen. I just hope that there is some sort of means testing in place to ensure it goes to the right people/children.
If children are starving and malnourished wouldn't they be all skin and bone?

Nobody is saying that Dave, this isn't Ethiopia. But kids going a day or two without a hot meal is unacceptable, and if we have the means to avoid that, we should do.

Absolutely agree.
Agree as well. So long as the investigation looks at what parents of starving children are sending their money on.
