Perhaps because there were 696 deaths a few days ago?
Because in some areas R is above 1.
the answer's in the article
"The aim is to keep R below 1 until a vaccine is rolled out."
It may not be actually increasing, but a lot of people have it.

Wrong - we are enduring these stupid measures to keep the R number below 1 for a few weeks just so Boris can gloat and say "Well I gave you the liberty to behave recklessly at Christmas" prior to a further lockdown in January when cases soar yet again. I suppose utter madness we should now take for granted from this so-called government.
not only those two very good answers but also to be able to have a bit more freedom over christmas. To avoid the R going well above 1 caused by people getting together, as much headroom as possible is needed beforehand....so you make massive effort before christmas so when (not if) the infection by number rate climbs, there will be space for that without the infection growth rate (R number) booming out of control.
I do wonder why these things need explaining? surely its obvious?
Being in the Leicester area we will be in lockdown for the foreseeable future.
(sigh) and (eyeroll)
Diddly, while I don't agree with everything this government has done, and when.... which other do you imagine would have done any better, and kept everyone happy all the time?
I don't think it has much to do with which party... any government would need to be "seen" to be doing the right thing, and not suggesting they don't care about lives. Who would have been better? And how?
Just an opportunity for Diddly to (try) and have a dig Woof.
Question Author
Who would have been better? Anyone other than Boris the Buffoon.
so have you found a brexiteer in Oxford yet?
Diddly, your obsession with knocking this government is bordering on mania.Your posts are increasingly boring and repetitive.Try putting brain in gear before posting.
Wise posting from Pixie. Sighs and eyes rolling here, just like Woofy.
Who would have been better? Given the choice we had which one of the others would you have chosen Diddly. As you don't know any Tories let us know who you would have picked.
Diddly, who? And what would they have done differently?
perhaps we shall never know pixie
Clearly not.... a lot of hot air and no substance... apparently.
I would have added an 8 pm curfew during lockdown. ( People less likely to meet friends for an illicit booze up if they were likely to be picked up on the way home) And I would now close schools a week early so families can self isolate together before going mad at Nanna's for christmas
diddlydo- nothing wrong with preferring Kier to Boris (although Kier prefers even tighter restrictions) but your not being consistent- your wanting to remove tiered restrictions to give more freedom then your complaining about looser restrictions at Christmas.
