Again, as already discussed above, referring to someone as a “black” is very offensive in French and English.
It’s not flagged as such in my dictionary but I think if I referred to a black person within earshot as a “black” I’d immediately regret it and hope he hadn’t heard

And as I said before it feels odd because it’s not as if Webo was the only “noir/black/negru” around.

And don’t forget in any case English is not the language here so we shouldn’t really be worrying about the actual word “black”. “Negru” sounds like ...

It's not the word black that is the problem it is why was it used.

West Indians was early on in my younger days, seems to have been replaced by Afro Caribeans.

well he used the word "negru" which no doubt sounded like the N word. I know, all the world should learn English and they'll be less "racist".
