Most predicted back in November that he would not go quietly and he still has a few more days left to rile his mobs even more. If he still doesn't accept Biden's win and still won't concede, who knows which direction this will go in. He still has millions of supporters that hang on his every word and can't see him for what he really is.
(Soon-to-be-ex) Senator Loeffler was intending to object to the Electoral College certification process. She just backed down. She was one of Trump's strongest backers, right up until this morning (partly because of the election in Georgia), one of the strongest voices for the idea that the election was rigged.
It shouldn't have taken these protests to force Republicans to blink, but I'm relieved that they are finally, at the last minute, recognising the folly of this path.

For quite a while before Trump the Republicans courted the crazy far right to gain power. The Tea Party movement were testing the waters that Trump tapped into later. I think it is fair to say the Republican Party has done the Republican Party a lot of damage, not just one man.
The Republican Party could have reined in Trump when he lost the election, but they were as crazy, and just as culpable as he is.
