No we weren’t. We had the highest death rate in Europe from the beginning. Twice as many have died in the UK than Germany, a country of similar population.
The new strain isn’t any more deadly, and the second wave came long before the UK strain took off.

Discharging vulnerable people from hospitals to Care Homes that didn’t have any PPE at the time, was more of a factor. It is the single reason our death rate exploded compared to nearly everyone else.
