...form the PM. On BBC Breakfast today, they reported that the PM said hospital cases are rising, which isn't true. The latest CV update on the govt website doesn't bear this out. There has been no increase in hospital admissions in the last 7 days. See here.

With daily death figures hovering near single figures; hospital admissions averaging near 120 daily, it seems that this virus is under control. The figures now, don't point to any increase, except positive tests. Why is the govt scaremongering like this? Maybe they've got used to doing it. Maybe they think people like being State Controlled.

In north west hospital admissions are rising again, in the south west for example they continue to decline, so overall there is no increase, but in some areas there is.

Since, as far as I can see, the data on daily admissions stops seven days ago, and the data on total patients three days ago, it is hardly surprising that there is no increase visible in the last week.

Nevertheless, the rise seems slight, and I am not sure if it is evidence that the present measures along with the vaccination programme are incapable of controlling the spread. It was inevitable that, once relaxing the measures, there would be *some* rise in figures, and this also marks the first week or so of such a rise. If the picture seems similar this time next week, ie another 10-20% rise again along with continuing growth in cases, maybe that should give pause for thought, but at present I can't see why this wasn't within the Government's expectation when setting out the timetable.
Not everywhere will fully ease lockdown restrictions on 21st June. There will be pockets of high infection rate that will rightly have to carry on with restrictions.
That should have been obvious months ago when we saw how the variants made clusters of infected.
The Prime Minister should not have promised a nationwide easing on 21st June. Throughout this crisis he has promised things that were just not deliverable. From Christmas gatherings to testing and apps that were months too late.

What the Govt are doing reminds me of Micky Flanagan weighing up his wife on a Monday or Tuesday in order to go to the pub on a Friday.

He keeps on making noises so that, as NJ said, if (when) he reneges on 21/6, we'll all just shrug our shoulders.
There is no meaningful reason not to honour the 21st June.

in the press today is a report proclaiming that there will be zero AIDS transmission in the UK by 2030. that's 9 years off.....
....whereas the government today appears to be pursuing a "zero covid" policy, for a virus that is many times more transmissible than AIDS. we're going to be waiting many years for that goal to be realised.

//I cant believe people will bend over and accept that restrictions to continue after June 21st, but they will do.//
The thing is, dave, as I keep saying, it is not up to "people". Just about they only thing a rebellion amongst the population can achieve is the ditching of face coverings and perhaps breaking the "gathering" numbers indoors. All the other measures that are still in place are restrictions on businesses: "social distancing" in pubs and restaurants; a limit on "gatherings" in such places; working from home where possible; restrictions on numbers in theatres and cinemas; restrictions on numbers allowed entry to theme parks, etc; GPs' surgeries being virtually closed to patients.
To unilaterally ignore all these measures (many of which are causing immense damage in one way or another) requires the complicity of landlords, proprietors and organisations. Most of the places mentioned require some form of licencing, usually by a Local Authority. These authorities will be more than happy to continue to police this errant nonsense until the cows come home and beyond, with the threat of licence withdrawal as the ultimate sanction. It's Manna from Heaven for them. In fact many of them believe this is their hour. With the possible exception of Lord Lloyd Weber (who may turn Charlie when push comes to shove) the people who are dependent on their licences to continue to trade simply cannot take the risk to defy the legislation.
