Not read all this thread but mining was a hard, dirty & dangerous job. Many miners I knew were hard drinkers and lived artificially shorter lives. None wanted their sons to go down t'pit.

So it may have financially impacted a generation & some communities but closing the pits was probably beneficial in the long run.
