ichi : "It’s the usual story: do we want the services at a good price or do we want better pay but higher prices."
The second "we" and the first "we" are two different groups.
Customers (the Public) are encouraged ( = inculcated) into self-interested glee at paying the lowest price they can get (docile minion pacification), whereas in a fair world customers would pay the actual, externalities adjusted, market value price (unless subsidization by government was necessary for prevention of starvation/ mass social revolt),
and some workers treated as unskilled, lack of the right qualifications, low social status so pay them as little s possible, menial inconsequentials, should be paid their true market and civic worth.

If they do bring in drivers from the EU then they should be employed on the same terms and wages as drivers here and not for firms to use as cheap labour as has happened in the past and put UK drivers either out of work or leave the profession because of low wages. If there is no advantage to using overseas labour they may start to have to pay a decent wage and get more locals to think about driving HGV for a living.
Thanks for your input,NJ.However, fine words butter no parsnips. The departure of thousands of EU workers here in Britain has caused massive problems all round.Johnson and his bunch of incompetents have only compounded the problem. Now they have the cheek to plead for the EU workers they threw out to come back to Britain.Jesus wept.
Andrew Marr this morning interviewing transport secretary Grant Shapps . Shapp stated 'well of course shortages of drivers is a direct result of Brexit'. Maybe not exactly those words, and I tried to get a transcript but maybe later on today. He admitted Driver shortages, with the resulting temporary shortages of fuel and some foods, are a direct result of Brexit. So well done all you Brexiteers -you won! Now collect your prizes....oh sorry they've all been delayed...in a layby north of Portsmouth waiting for an HGV driver. There should be some shortly though -5000 coming over from the very place Brexiteers sent them back to lol!

I look forward to reading that transcript. It's not what the BBC is saying about the interview.

The haulier shortage is obviously directly related to Brexit, as reversing the Brexit legislation related to work visas is the way that the government is attempting to fix it. To say it's the fault of companies not being able to deal with Brexit is incorrect, Brexit was always going to cause problems for businesses however these were billed as necessary collateral damage to the larger cause of 'Sovereignty", which unfortunately doesn't drive lorries.
Would be nice if we had some tangible benefits of Brexit to offset some of the problems it's causing.
