Boris announced yesterday that masks are to be made compulsory again in shops. In the summer he said that there would be no going back on the relaxation of measures. Face masks are a complete waste of time given the way that most people wear them so how many will join me in this little bit of civil disobedience and refuse to wear them?

However, in all seriousness, when I do go venture further afield into a shop I wear a mask. Its become habit now, but the time I spend in a shop is such a small percentage of my time that it matters not to me.

ymb, if Omicron does prove to be weaker than other variants, then we can open up again, no argument with that. Initial reports suggested the opposite, however.

I've given Boris credit (not something I often do) for acting quickly this time, when this previous dithering has cost thousands of lives. But we are not in lockdown again, as you well know.

Good grief! What has this country come to? Compulsory vaccination is against the law in the UK. So instead you're advocating that people who refuse a vaccine should be "locked down". What precisely do you mean by that? Confined to their homes? Unable to go to work? Unable to go out for supplies? You need to explain because this Draconian measure that you propose is to counter a disease that a large number of sufferers (possibly the majority) don't even know that they have; of those who do know, most of them will require no medical treatment. A few (about one in twenty of those diagnosed - but not of those who have had it) need hospitalisation; fewer still (about one in seventy of those diagnosed - but again not of those who have had it) will unfortunately die. And you're suggesting that people who decline a voluntary vaccination against this disease are in some way "locked down". What is your reason for suggesting this measure?

Covid is highly transmissable and even though it has a relatively low mortality rate (compared to MERS or ebola or something) a small percentage of a large number of cases is still an awful lot of people dying unnecessarily....
...that and the virus has shown the ability to mutate if allowed to spread... if we simply allow that then it will eventually become vaccine-resistant unless we are very very lucky...

Singapore is not insisting that people are vaccinated, but it is saying that anyone who chooses not to be vaccinated will not have their treatment costs covered by the Government should they come down with Covid.

Two points:

1. The "small %age of a large number" is still not an awful lot. "Covid" deaths in the UK currently account for about one in fifteen daily deaths. But there is no analysis of just how "Covid" these deaths are. Many are deaths of people who are ill with other serious conditions who may succumb to any infection they may contract.
2. The term "dying unnecessarily" is inappropriate. It implies that such deaths are preventable. They are not. As much as it would like to think so (and have the population think so as well) governments cannot prevent people contracting a highly infectious virus. Short of ultra-draconian measures there is little or nothing that will prevent the spread of Covid. Some severe measures may delay the spread a little but now that as many people who want it have been vaccinated and the hospitals are coping well (with hospital cases at about 15% of their peak last year) even that is pointless.

On what measures that based jno? Not deaths per million because theres lots worse than us like Belgium and we'er in line with Spain italy.
If infections then yes without seeing the figures am not too surprised but am pretty sure we're testing more and being more honest and open than many others

Jno your claim that only 3 governments done worse than UK is wrong. Based on per million population we're below usa Belgium razil peru Italy Hungary Bulgaria and about 30 others for deaths. Even on cases per million we'er not near the top 10 despite are high testing. Does anyone really belieave we have true figures for places like Russia Syria China Angola
