Just seen an interview with a mother who lost her son to knife crime.Also there was a Chief Inspector from Lancashire on a TV link.He came out with some real 21st century claptrap about working with the perpetrators to find out why they carry knives and get caught up in violence.Surely they should be attempting to get knives off the streets and not trying to be social workers,there are enough doing that already.

//…jail which hasn't worked for over 200 years.//

Jail does work. For the term of their incarceration, the rest of society are given a break from the effects of the miscreants’ activities. That should be seen as its overriding (and in most cases, sole) function. You’re surely not expecting it to “rehabilitate” prolific or serious offenders, are you?

//…or deaths would be a daily occurrence.//

Deaths are a daily occurrence. In 2019 there were 671 convictions for murder and manslaughter. That’s getting on for two a day.

The police do not need to “work with perpetrators”. They need to prevent them committing crimes and if they cannot do that detect them and bring them to justice. That is their overriding function. They don’t need to understand why they commit crimes. I can tell them the answer: in most cases it is because they are disposed towards criminality. That’s all they need to know.
I know a guy who was a local police sergeant. He always said if he had 2 or 3 of the local villains (burglars) locked up there was a substantial reduction in crime - until they got out.
Is castration of knife carrying youths too extreme?

But that wouldn't stop them carrying a knife.
There has to be a punishment that scares the knife carriers enough to cause them not to carry knives. The Birch perhaps?
To discourage others Danny.
McMouse, that might work but I doubt that it would ever happen.
I can dream Danny.
:-)
sounds extreme but death penalty, or loose an arm if caught with a knife for nefarious reasons, could start with fingers at first...i don;t know.
Actually I can see some benfit in understanding why knives are carried. In many cases it will be simply because they are criminals who cant get a gun so carry a knife but I am sure there are other reasons. The Police shouldnt be doing this though and it should be done whilst the miscreant is incarcerated.

Couple this with a decent deterrent or at least removel from society. Carry a hidden knife (or without good reason) 5 years minimum. Use a knife 10 years minimum, kill someone with a knife in the absence of the rope mandatory full life with no parole. Repeat of the first two min sentence doubles each time.
