What next, well that is the million dollar question.

Quite possibly the West will have to beef up defences in NATO bordering countries. Can use the same excuse Putin has just used.

Sanctions really are pointless posturing. Most needed money and assets will have been moved so will have little impact. If the West starts taking assets such as property then that could be seen as provocation so only freezing is possible. The Russian oligarchs will simply view this as long term investment.

He is a dictator, he likes the power, he likes to show off to his people how powerful he is, he wants Ukraine and Belarus back under his cobtrol just like in USSR days, he wants Ukraines gas, so he can control gas supplies even more and hold west to ransom, he wants to stop Ukraine applying to join NATO, and he just wants to stick 2 fingers up to the west,

the casus belli (*) is the Russian minority is being oppressed. That was put in by Stalin, on purpose - crimea being er 90% Russian and the Crimean Tatars were deported or in Gulags

BUT the northern states, when the USSR broke up - - - negotiated return of their eastern russian occupied lands quietly inc Finland.
No reason to go to war ( but he will find a difft reason)
