It's perhaps more a case of Boris trying to make sure Rishi isn't an effective threat to him.

I don't want him for Prime Minister.
Don't know about his chances to become P.M. gone but he won't be getting his leg over for a few weeks.

Thanks Corby, I don't think Ukraine has saved Boris from a leadership challenge - they'd be crazy to ditch him and I think they know that - and I don't believe Sunak was ever a viable alternative.

Boris will wipe the floor with Rodders in 2024 and then go mid term, to give the new man a run up to the 2029 election. Richie may well still be a contender then. I wonder who labour will have.

Sunak is being attacked now because Johnson’s friends think there is a threat to his premiership. And they want to eliminate any possible contenders in a leadership contest.
The Met haven’t cleared Johnson of partygate. He still may be fined.
The war has given Johnson some breathing space, but things can quickly change.
