Lots of countries (& cities) names in their own language are different from the English equivalent. They can call themselves whatever they like & we can call them what we like, innit.

not sure of that, PP, someone checked out all of the indigenous languages and couldn't find one in which kangaroo meant "I don't know", so it may be a suburban myth.

There is also a NZ village called Nonoti, allegedly after one of the first settlers suggested to another one that he might like to choose a name for it.
