"France has accused the UK of failing to pay more than £8 million it promised to fund beach patrols as a new diplomatic spat broke out after a record 1,295 migrants crossed the Channel in a single day.

The local authority in France that covers Calais said officers had intercepted 390 further crossings, but this accounted for less than a quarter of the total 1,685 people who attempted crossings on Monday.

About 800 patrols are deployed daily to combat illegal immigration in northern France, but the authorities say the numbers are “insufficient” to patrol the entire 100-mile stretch of coast used by smugglers."

The '800 patrols' for which Britain has already paid, do not appear to be doing very well. In fact there was a photograph a while back of two French cops standing watching them carrying their dinghy across the beach before embarkation.

As I’ve already advocated, round them up daily, put them in a landing craft and return them to a French beach, under cover of darkness if necessary.
They’re not providing the service we’ve paid handsomely for already, time to recoup what’s been lost/wasted.

1 We've already paid but those who paid were throwing cash at a windmill. The French were never going to 'do their bit' because they'll be glad to be rid of the migrants and it damages us - 2 birds with one stone.
2 It is August, they are on holiday. Everything in France more or less stops in August (I knew people whose due operations were rescheduled to September because everyone was on holiday). Those who remain on duty will be annoyed about it and unlikely to work hard anyway.

It beats me why we continue to expect France to be helpful and keep its word. This is politics.
(Nothing to do with the lovely French people I know/knew who are perfectly OK with Brits..)

Call in the SAS, say we must stop this without endangering lives, do whatever is necessary. I've (almost*) no idea what they would do, but feel sure somehow the problem would end.

Why would you need the SAS for unarmed men, women and children?
Just return them to a French beach, it’s a simple process, no need for Special Forces.

As I said before - send British "troops" to destroy dinghies on the French coast - they could easily be pinpointed with drones. If the French don't like it tough but if it ends the cross-channel scramble surely it would benefit both countries?

Paying the French for (at best) doing nothing or (at worst) actually helping the migrants is a complete nonsense.

Until the late 1990s, all members of the Special Air Service (SAS) Boat Troop were trained as commando frogmen. I don't know the situation now but some will still certainly be.

One thought I had was that it would be a simple matter to put the outboard engine propeller out of action before the dinghy had even left French waters. ?
