Who's going to clean up all that mess?
I know I seem like a spoilsport, but these festivals/carnivals seem to get more and more out of hand each year and I think they should stop them now before someone gets killed.
I'm just pleased I don't live anywhere near there - or Leeds or anywhere there's a carnival like this. A wedding marquee in the village and music until midnight was plenty enough. I'm sorry A.O.G. seems to be no more.
Sadly, I think AOG was in a care home, and was a victim of his beloved Boris’ utter incompetence at the start of covid. RIP.
A carnival mostly appreciated by our Caribbean cousins, will undoubtedly get dissed by ABs old fuddy duddys.
I've never been able to understand what this 'carnival' is all about; it has always seemed to be about black people demonstrating their ethnicity, (very big deal!)
The word, 'Carnival' comes from the old Italian carnelevare a removing of meat (referring to the Lenten fast). I fails to see any religious connotations.
'Carnival therefore represented a last period of feasting and celebration before the spiritual rigors of Lent." Meat was plentiful during this part of the Christian calendar and it was consumed during Carnival as people abstained from meat consumption during the following liturgical season, Lent.'
"1950 Oxf. Junior Encycl. IX. 114/2 We now use the word ‘carnival’ in a general sense to describe a particular kind of public celebration or entertainment which includes a fancy dress procession through the streets.
1950 Oxf. Junior Encycl. IX. 115/1 During the summer holiday season,..seaside resorts sometimes arrange imitations of the continental carnival, the main feature being a beauty competition for the election of the Carnival Queen."
