If what the BBC reports is correct Truss is freezing energy bills for 18 months, which I think is damn good news for most of us.

predicting a cold winter in Europe.
Very grown up.
As Ukrainian forces now start to push their way into the previously almost wholly occupied Luhansk region, I predict a very cold winter for the Kremlin.

At the current levels? I hope so, It's the right thing to do. Let the energy companies absorb it, that is in effect a very efficient way of imposing a windfall tax. It will help everyone, all the businesses etc and stop inflation going through the roof.
No doubt the 5C poltroons will find something to moan about.

1) What do you mean by 'Energy companies' ?
2) If you mean the suppliers (OVO etc) they make circa £55 per household. Do you think they should go broke?
3) If you mean the multinationals (BP Shell etc) how do you propose to enforce that without long term damage?

YMB: "1) What do you mean by 'Energy companies' ?" - The ones we buy it from the ones they are talking about windfall taxing, the ones raking it in, ERF etc.
"3) If you mean the multinationals (BP Shell etc) how do you propose to enforce that without long term damage? " - They are making huge profits as are the retailers as prices rise their percentages rise. It's tht they don't get the money in the first place rather than let them stock pile it and have the government wrest it back via windfall tax.
This is not something I would normally espouse but until we get that Russian Bar steward under control and ease our reliance on fossil fuels what's the alternative? Let energy prices rise by 500% and kill off thousands of businesses leaving the ones that do survive to hike up their prices and fuel inflation through the roof. Strikes over pay etc etc etc and round we go again.

The companies we buy from, the suppliers like OVO etc dont make a huge sum. It looks large but once divided by the number of punters the amount is small. In addition many had to absorb those that went belly up.
The companies making the money selling on the wholesale market are the big companies like Shell, BP etc. OK tax them but do that and you are likely to find they move (very easily) to another country to declare their profits. Then you have lost long term.
The only way will be to borrow money to temporarily subsidise people but we need to ensure money goes mostly where it is needed. Setting up a department computer scheme would be pointless, Government departments cant do that efficiently so the best way would be to cap the price up to a certain value. This would mostly help those in smaller accommodation who are likely to be the ones who need it whilst at the same time not paying for someones hot tub. In addition VAT and Green taxes should be removed from bills as should the subsidies to falsely make renewables look viable,
To ensure the wholesale price drops we need to ensure we have more fuel. This is easy for the UK Fracking, getting more out the new NS fields together with a longer term plan on Nuclear.
I other words wind back Net Zero.
Rant over.

Ymb,
// Guess you are not a taxpayer then Gromit? //
You guess wrong.
Why don’t the Government get on with the windfall tax, even the energy producing companies know it is going to happen, and they are prepared for it.
BP doubled their profits last year, and look set to triple them this year. Even the company are embarrassed by the large sums they are making, and know they will have to use some of it to help the struggling people using their products.

TORATORATORA, "At the current levels? I hope so, It's the right thing to do. Let the energy companies absorb it, that is in effect a very efficient way of imposing a windfall tax."
How would the energy companies be absorbing anything if the plan is to lend them money which will be repaid over decades by consumers?

Energy pricing is bonkers anyway.
We should not be in hock to high gas prices as gas is only one part of it.
As for electicity, Ukraine was planning to sell electricity to Europe but the Russians are doing their best to kibosh that idea by commandeering energy generation. That really is what the nuclear stand off is mainly about: not nuclear terrorosim but simple theft, as well as the controlling of the huge hydro electric power station a bit further south.
