I can't belive it was almost 60 years ago, the fear the case caused in the North West influenced many people's lives. In later years we drove over Saddleworth Moor quite often and I always felt uncomfortable.
Thanks to the persistence of this man, Keith's remaining family may finally have closure. Pity his mother died without being able to give her son a decent burial.
Saddleworth is actually quite a beautiful area (Saddleworth golf club is one of the most interesting and picturesque I've ever played). The locals and business owners must wince when news like this comes up.
why do you say that, nero - the question is how they could have missed the body....surely they must have radiated out from where the others were found - just like using a rolling line on a search in a field. I have been involved in some searches like this in the past, the last also for a murder victim, a teenage girl, but not in this country.
The one advantage that 'we' do have now against back then is the use of drones with thermal detection....
ive followed these searches on line that were still ongoing in the 2009 and with thermal detection, nobody could have done more than GMP but it just one of those things that happen i do hope Keith is found and yes pity his mum wouldn't have been able to see this
i was living in manchester when the news of Edward Evans came out that started these searches off,
Thank goodness for this dedicated man.
Closure now for the family. Feel very sad the Mother didn't live to witness this and as Ken said , give her son a decent burial.
The day after John Kilbride disappeared I saw the police combing Ashton golf course looking for him. My dad was a part-time Peak District warden who was involved in the searches on Saddleworth Moor. I will never forget how harrowing he found that and how exhausted he was when he came home. I worked in Saddleworth for many years and still have many friends there. Although the events are not often discussed they are still there casting a very dark shadow over a very beautiful but rugged area. Like others I sincerely hope that this discovery will give Keith Bennett's remaining family closure at long last.
Thank you, novalis. I have always thought that the community living in the area and all those people, both police and civilians, who joined in the search must carry the brunt of the despair and incomparable sadness for the rest of us.
I regularly ran around the masts, reservoirs and roman roads and didnt feel anything
as for
missing things
the scorned but real chilemize - that was on Azariah Chamberlain when she was snatched by the dingo (Lindy didnt to it) or not ( Lindy lying and DID do it).
was found latterly ( a few years later) by the aboriginal search party who had missed it first time round (*)
( shillemise there, lindy truthing and so didnt do it)
.
(*)odd case where a fat tattooed brit had fallen off Ayers Rock and a helicopter need to land on flat ground, wh. whirled and dusted . When the dust had settled, there was the Shillimeeze which Aza had been wearing.
I am so glad that Keith Bennett's remains have been found. It is sad that his mother died without finding some comfort in the burial of her son's remains, but hopefully the rest of the family can take a little comfort.
Rest in peace, sweet child.
//The locals and business owners must wince when news like this comes up.//
Tough. Let them wince. The retrieval of this tragic child's remains is more important than a temporary blip in the profits of the local business community.
I so hope this is Keith Bennett's little skull and police can find all of his remains, I grew up during this time and felt so sad (not like today, news just seems to rub off people) but these monsters tormented Keith's Mother all her life by not giving the location of his poor little body, as others on here have said, it might bring comfort and closure to remaining family.
