Senior Conservative MP Charles Walker tells the BBC that after this evening's events in the voting lobby, he's livid and has run out of patience with his party and his colleagues.
Visibly shaken, Walker says it is "inexcusable" and there is "no coming back" from this for the government.
"I think it's a shambles and a disgrace," Walker says, adding that the current government has damaged his party's reputation.
/Labour shadow minister Anna McMorrin wrote on Twitter that she witnessed one Conservative MP "in tears" in the lobby after the vote.
Ms McMorrin tweeted: "Extraordinary stuff happening here during the vote on fracking which is apparently 'not a confidence vote'.
"I've just witnessed one Tory member in tears being manhandled into the lobby to vote against our motion to continue the ban on fracking."
Labour MP Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, said he witnessed "whips screaming at Tories" and described it as "open warfare"./
Anyone know why Liz Truss didn’t vote and the (now former) Chief Whip abstained?
Aw thats bad news. The chief whip is MP for the constituency where I live. The only thing she is any good for is turning up at garden fetes and such like, but only if there are photo opportunities.
In light of all the allegations and confusion over whether it was a ‘confidence vote’ or not by the government it appears clear that the vote should be taken again and properly scrutinised, if not actually televised.
