And your understanding is correct!
And I stand to be corrected - Thank you.
And I hasten to add, the entrepreneurial skills of those Ugandan Asians that settled here, made a significant contribution to Britain commerce.
Business sectors such as textiles and the retail trade benefited immensely. Equally important, it served to regenerate those economically depressed inner city areas around the UK too!

'Albanian migrants are walking out of hotels to work on cannabis farms within three days of arriving in the UK across the Channel, an investigation has revealed.
The young men describe being released from detention into hotels where they are recruited by Albanian crime gangs to cultivate cannabis in farms set up in empty houses and industrial buildings across England and Wales.
Their confessions, screened on Albanian TV's A2CNN, paint a picture of young men in their 20s working to clear debts of £5,000 after paying Kurdish people smugglers for cross-Channel journeys of up to 40 hours in a dinghy.
One, working in a “farm” in London, said he spent seven days in “mountains” in France as three Channel attempts were thwarted by police who punctured the boats each time. On the fourth attempt, he was rescued by the UK coastguard when his packed dinghy ran out of petrol after 11 hours and started drifting mid Channel.
“We were kept for three days in a detention centre then transferred to a hotel. I managed to talk with my relative who came and took me from the hotel. I am working in a cannabis house to pay the money I borrowed to pay for the journey on the boat,” he told Ervin Koci, the Albanian TV journalist who interviewed them.'

Ultimately we are talking about the lives and well being of human beings.
It is such a hot potato. No government which purports human civil rights as being absolutely paramount and a fundamental bedrock of their constitution, can afford to be regarded or give the appearance of acting callously.
Granted, Britain is under strain in many areas of its infrastructure. However the idea of towing back dinghies to French shores is fraught with danger. The capsize and loss of just one single life in doing so, would reverberate around the world - A stigma, British government can well do without.
It is sensible to have limits on immigration. Anything else risks unfavourable consequences in all parts of our society.
I too am a keen supporter of Braverman. However, she must learn to choose her language more carefully!

Canary , the migrant crisis hasn’t just started with this government, it actually started with Tony Blair who as we know was New Labour
/// Immigration under New Labour from 1997 to 2010 was the immigration policy under the government of Tony Blair and then subsequently the continuation of large scale immigration under Gordon Brown.//

// Pussyfooting around the 'precious' is one of the reasons we're in this situation.//
The frustrations of the public are palpable and for good reason.
A good government minister knows, guile is the best form of attack in achieving one's aims. Like the old proverb tells us; 'Softly softly catchy the monkey'.
