I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

Roy - In answer to your confusion - yes black members of Twitter are members of the black community, just not all of it, giving a united view of every black person in the UK.
Always happy to steer you in the right direction.

While you have been pontificating on here I have been interacting with POC on twitter and despite what you and Elipsis think the black community are very divided over this. Many Africans thing she is guilty of cultural appropriation. I personally think cultural appropriation is nonsense but there you are.
As you can clearly see I mention POC on Twitter. At no time did I say the black people on Twitter represent all black people.
I will now await more made up nonsense from yourself.

I have been following this story with great interest as I've had those exact words said to me. I now live in the UK quite far from where I was born and grew up. A few years ago, attending a social event, a woman said "that's not a local accent, where are you from?" I replied Sussex and she said "No, where are you really from? (sounds familiar?)
I repeated Sussex and she said " I meant whereabouts in Sussex were you born".
Just a small incident where a person didn't make her question clear, almost forgotten until I read this item.

murraymints - // ignorance is an all encompassing term, genuine naivety and unintentional mis- use of terminology and line of questioning.. give the old dear a break..my gran came out with MUCH worse and she was as non racist as you could hope to fall over..GET OVER IT dearie... move along.. //
No problem for you of course, you knew your gran very well, and knew she meant no malice in her expressions.
But imagine a black person meeting her for the first time ...
It would be great if we could wear illuminated signs expressing how we are, as opposed to what we may appear to be saying.
I could have one that says "I am occasionally sarcastic, and my sarcasm may be taken seriously, when not intended ..."
Lady Hussey could wear one that says "I am not a racist, but I sometimes clumsily epxress myself, but I mean no malice by it at all ..."
and so on.
But sadly, in the real world, we meet strangers, and form impressions on them based on what they say, unclarrified by

... what they are acutally like, or mean to say.
That means, if you imply to a black person that you have just met, that they are lying to you about their country of origin, and you know that, so just come clean and say what they really meant to say ... the black person is likely to be offended.
And that is what happened here.
Now I don't for one moment agree with Ms Fulani spinning this into 'assault' or anything like it, but I do entirely see why she was upset.
I also understand why lady Hussey, realising she had caused offence, had the grace to apologise immediately, and I am sorry she felt the need to resign her position which I view as unnecessary, but clearly a matter for her and no-one else.

William - // I read that Lady Hussey has hearing problems and repeated herself, and to have to lose a job after the self-righteous outrage of a young person is outrageous. Society should not let the young make the agenda like this. //
That's not quite what apparently happened, if you read the news reports.
Lady Hussey did not 'repeat herself', she said "Where do you REALLY come from?" - the clear implication being - You're not actually British, so where in Africa are you from?" which she then emphasised by saying "Where are your people from?" which simply underlines her status as disbelieving that a black woman in African robes is actually British by birth.
That is what the offence was, and as I seem to be repeating ad nauseum, Lady Hussey acknowledged that she did cause offence, albeit unintentionally, and apologised for it.
