What's In A Name?

My mother and siblings called their father Poppy. We grandchildren did too. He died when I was about eight.
Many years later my sister, who lived three doors from my mother, got a dog which I think already had the name Poppy.
My mother hit the roof. She phoned me ranting and raving about how she couldn't live with sister calling for the dog and reminding her of her dead father. She'd be in tears every time she heard her grandchildren playing with the dog. I must come over and sort it out and get the name of the dog changed. Just hearing the name would stir memories.

When I got there my sister started ranting about how changing the dog's name would confuse it and damage it's mental health. She wouldn't do that to the dog. They had fallen out big time.
I figured the only one with damaged mental health in this family would be me.

The dog ran away not long after. I didn't blame it.

I now have a Great-granddaughter named Poppy. It's probably just as well my mother isn't alive.
I couldn't go through that again. :-)

I was going to be a Poppy ( 11-11) if my Dad had his way , I think it’s lovely now but not so 1951 when I started school :0/

I like the name Poppy. I don't know how my mother coped with Remembrance Day. :-)

Could be worse. Alstrom
Alstroemeria.

But the moment's passed.
The latest trend is to spell an abbreviated name differently

Only if my grandad and the dog were called Lily, Douglas. ;-)
Bobbs, I think you would have been the only one to be called that as I don't remember anyone named that at my school in 1951. I like it, it seems a lot of people have a name that we usually associate with animal names.
Think of Pippa Middleton,( don't know her married name) my daughter's dog is called Pippa and I once knew someone who called their little baby Bruce and I only knew that as a dogs name.
Strangely enough Barsel, there was a girl in my class called Poppy when I started, the most unfortunate one though was called Ann Summers ( I hope she got married)
The American stand-up Steven Wright said that he named his dog "Stay."

It went insane :o(
Bobbs that made me laugh out loud. x

Parents can do stupid things.

I worked with a woman whose first names were Linda May ...

... here parents were Mr & Mrs Gotobed.

Despite being an ardent feminist, she was pleased to take her husband's surname when they married.
Poppy is a Lovely name.
I have sympathies for a little baby boy I know, born recently, has been given the name Lucius Drake . I can imagine the names he will be called by his future school friends .. Lucy, Lucky Duck. (That's only the mild ones)
When I was born at home . it was necessary to go to the registry office to register baby. There had been many discussions as to my name and eventually my dad was dutifully sent to do the registration. When he got there and told registrar that the name was to be Jacqueline my mum's choice, he was asked to spell it.. My dad didn't know how so he decided to give the other name my nan had wanted. To this day I sometimes wonder how I would have felt being a Jacqueline. .. It's not me..I think that somehow Dad made the right choice
Why did they call their late father Poppy. Was it an extension of Pop, or was it his real name.
I also thing Poppy is a lovely name never would I refer my step father... just Dad. and Ma for my Mum... bit of Americanisms Pop and Mama.
*think Poppy...
I read this thread and immediately went to Facebook to see what was happening in the world.
