....that anything Austria does makes zero difference to world emissions. Why do they not target the countries that can make a difference?
// anything Austria does makes zero difference to world emissions //
not so sure about that. Austria's big industry is skiing, which has effectively zero going for it in terms of being green - hundreds of flights descending on the place in little more than 3 months, megawatts of electricity running hundreds of lifts, not to mention the huge amounts of resources used making snow when the real thing doesn't fall out of the sky (like this year...).
mushroom: "not so sure about that" - well nothing the UK does can possibly make a difference and the UK is much bigger. It therefore follows that Austria also can have no effect.
yes, up to a point, but if the big ones do nowt the rest is pointless. No point stopping the squirrels peacing on the lawn if you are not going to stop the elephants.
All the virtue signalling - ‘cos that’s what it is - won’t change anything. Unless the world is prepared to give up its lifestyle - and it isn’t - nothing will change. Its all just more hot air.
The best thing about this story is "...twelve children, aged between 5 and 16, are taking legal action against the Austrian government..."
A 5 year old!
My knowledge of climate change is pretty appalling, which is why I rarely venture into the threads on climate change, but even with my appalling knowledge, I have a teensy suspicion it's greater than a 5 year old's knowledge.
untitled: "the economic consequences of climate change are going to be pretty horrendous if nobody does anything to mitigate it" - indeed and the smaller countries are but they have no effect. China, US, India are the ones who can make a difference. I'd have more respect for the activists if they targetted those that can actually make a difference.
untitled: "I suppose this means you will afford climate activists more respect! " - When ours et al join them in US, China, India etc, then yes. But not while they disrupt the world's no2 climate change responder and countries like Austria that can do even less then they retain my contempt.
